Sarah achieves longbow GMB

The floor in the hall is being revarnished, so they don'y want anyone walking over it.
...due to our Handicap Portsmouth tournament taking place at Carnmoggas on Sunday.
On Sunday 23rd October there will be no afternoon session, as someone else needs the hall.
6th Aug. Last weekend at Newquay, Sarah Conisbee got the score she needed to be a longbow Grand Master Bowman! Archers can work towards levels in a classification system as a measure of how well they are shooting. In ascending order, the classifications are Third, Second and First Class, then Bowman, Master Bowman and Grand Master Bowman. It is quite an achievement to get to the highest level, so congratulations to Sarah.
Welcome to the eight new members who have joined us immediately following the recent beginners' course. We hope to see a couple more when they get round to it!
This summer we will be holding a club competition from May to September. Each month we will shoot a different round and based on handicaps decided from the first month's round, an overall winner will be awarded a trophy.
As this is to be handicap based, you all have a chance of success. Each month we will shoot on the third Thursday of that month. Please note that we must start at 7pm each time to ensure we can finish in daylight.
MAY 19th: A National round will be shot. (6 dozen arrows)
JUNE 16th: A Short Metric round will be shot (6 dozen arrows)
JULY 15th: A Western round will be shot (9 dozen arrows)
AUGUST 18th: A FITA 900 round will be shot (7 1/2 dozen arrows)
SEPT 15th: A Warwick round will be shot (4 dozen arrows)
Distances may vary according to people's ability.
In case anyone cannot shoot in any particular month then we will count only the best 4 of the 5 events to decide the winners.
Visitors are welcome to join in, but only AOW members are eligible for awards.
Sorry, but the football club need the pitches that day.
The outdoor season has started! We are now shooting at the rugby club on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. See here for more details.
On Sunday 13th February we held our Open Portsmouth. Most people seemed to have a good time, no doubt aided by the fact we actually had working heating this time! In fact, we had a couple of requests to turn it down. Our own Sarah Conisbee did particularly well with a new DCAS record for single and double Portsmouth by a Ladies Longbow. Well done, Sarah!
The results list can be downloaded from the Open Tournaments page.
The Christmas shoot on 19th December will be the last session for the year. There will be no shooting on Thursday 23rd, Sunday 26th, or Thursday 30th December. We will be back to normal as of Sunday 2nd January.
Held on Sunday 5th December, this was well attended and everyone seemed to enjoy the chance to do something a bit different. See here for a results list.
Newquay Bowmen hosted a 'Worcester' on Sunday 14th November, and some of our members did us proud.
Paul Phillips won the Gents Recurve, and was third in the compound. (Yes, he did shoot both!)
Sarah Conisbee won the Ladies Longbow.
Peter Conisbee was third in Gents Longbow.
Apologies to anyone who turned up on Thursday, only to find the hall occupied by brownies. (Yes, your webmaster did the same, and no, I didn't know about it either!)
The hall has also been booked by someone else for the evening of next Thursday, 4th November, so there will be no evening session. The afternoon session is going ahead, and will start at 3pm to allow time for people to finish a round and clear up in time for the evening.
We are now shooting indoors for the winter season, so don't turn up at the football club! Shooting venues and times are listed here.
1st: Joy Shaw with an ajdusted score of 1549
2nd: Bob Shaw with 1442
3rd: Paul Phillips with 1440
The club has made it to the grand old age of ten! We celebrated in style on Thursday 10th June with a fantastic spread of food and decorated tables - thanks to Sarah for organising it, and to everyone who contributed. We were subjected to a fiendish general and archery knowledge quiz, and even managed to find most of our founder members.
The birthday cake - almost seemed a shame to cut it.
But cut it was. Bob and Gwithian wielding the knife.
The founder members, at least some of whom are still shooting with us.
This was very well-attended, with only a few places left in the morning session, and none at all in the afternoon. The heating was working this time, which made it a whole lot more pleasant. A full results list will be posted here as soon as it is ready.
Congratulations to everyone who won something, evene if it was only a raffle prize! Congratulations also to Lucy Mackay from Brixham, who showed perfect grouping with a very neat "Robin Hood" shot.
Here are all the trophy and medal winners
Thank you to everyone who came along to our FITA 18 for making it an enjoyable day. The heating in the hall was a little erratic but we hope nobody minded too much.
Archers shot a FITA 18 qualification round, either in the morning or afternoon sessions. The best 16, 8, 4 or 2 archers in each class (depending on entries) then went on to shoot a Head to Head knockout round of a dozen arrows in each match. Some of the matches were very close, with only a point or two in it right to the end! Dowload the results here.
We held our annual summer handicap shoot on Saturday under most unusual weather conditions - it didn't rain! Adult members shot a Short Warwick, and the sole junior who turned up shot a Short Junior Warwick. There were awards for best unadjusted scores and for the highest overal on handicap. Here are the results.
Junior: Harry johnson 255
Recurve: 1st - David Dickens 356, 2nd - John Nunn 350, 3rd - Dave Fisher 324

Thanks to everyone for helping to set up and pack away quickly and efficiently.
Following our Spring 2009 beginner's course, we are pleased to welcome several new members. We wish them them well in their new archery careers.
At Lizard Penisula's open tournament in June, Jill Ward won the Ladies longbow Albion round, and David Fisher won the Gents recurve Windsor. Well done to them both.
Ladies Recurve: 1st Emma
Ladies Longbow: 1st Jill
Gents Recurve: 1st Bob
Gents Longbow: 2nd Paul
Well done to all.
We were fully booked for this event, although a couple of archers had to drop out for various reasons. The wind and rain were somewhat ferocious outside, but we were relatively cosy inside the hall. Two rounds were shot under the able eyes of our judges Steve and Mick, who helped us make sure everything went smoothly and finished on time. A results lists can be downloaded from the Open Tournaments page.
Archers shot FITA 18 qualification rounds in the morning and afternoon sessions, then the top eight or sixteen in each category, according to entries, went through a series of head to head knockout rounds of a dozen arrows each. Some rounds were very close! The results list can be downloaded from the Open Tournaments page.
We were a bit concerned we might have scared you all off with the higher fees, so we have reduced the shooting fee for visitors from £2.50 to £2.00. Please come along - we will be glad to see you!

Firsts for Bob Young and Sue Mackenzie (recurve), third for Paul Phillips (longbow)

Ladies Recurve: 1st, Emma Young (after a long break from shooting!)
Gents Recurve: 1st, Bob Young; 2nd, Paul Phillips
Gents Recurve Double Worcester: 1st, Bob Young, with a new DCAS record score!
New member Alan Humby wins the annual Summer Handicap Shoot. We shot a selection of Warwick rounds in rather damp and windy conditions on Saturday 6th September. At a handicap shoot each archer is given an allowance to add to their actual score which is based on their previous scores. Newer archers will have higher allowances, so everyone has an equal chance of winning. Well done to Alan!
Bob Young wins the Gents FITA at Dunster Week with a score of 1191. Dunster Castle hosts a very popular week of tournaments in June each year. Well done, Bob!

We have just completed our latest spring beginners' course, and we hope that many of them will join us as a result. We welcome them all to the wonderful world that is archery.
We have redesigned the website from scratch - we hope you like it!
